Celebration of 125th Anniversary of Fyodor Shalyapin's Birthday - Shalyapin Festival

Venues: Mariinsky Opera and Ballet Theater, Shostakovich Large Hall of St.Petersburg Philharmonic, "St.Petersburg-Opera"
  Gala concerts of world musical classics starts at the Mariinsky Theater with opera “The Flying Dutchman” by Wagner. Its Jan. 20 premiere (conductor — Valery Gergiev) falls on the second night of the scheduled Shalyapin Festival. Most of the festival's 20 performances will be closed to the heart of Shalyapin's musical artistry ("Boris Godunov" given at both the Mariinsky Theater and the St.Petersburg-Opera). The festival features performances by the Mussorgsky Theater of Opera and Ballet, the St.Petersburg State Capella and the St.Petersburg Philharmonic and will host a number of internationally acclaimed basses.

8th International non-fiction Film Festival "Message to Man"

Documentaries, short films, and animation films will be shown in various cinemas of the city

Funeral of the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II and his family

Location: Peter and Paul Cathedral
Nicholas II, his wife Alexandra, three of their five children and four servants will be buried in St. Catherine Chapel of Peter and Paul Cathedral. Peter and Paul Fortress will be close to the public throughout the ceremonies. Coffins with the royal remains will arrive from Yekaterinburg by plane on July 16. Alexander Nevsky was a Russian ruler (prince) who won a battle on the banks of the Neva River in 1240. He was later declared a Saint of the Russian Orthodox church and from the early 18th century was (and still is) considered a Patron Saint of St.Petersburg
